UV protection for workers is a critical issue for employers and landlords who need to meet stringent health and safety regulations. A new Melbourne office block had virtually floor to ceiling windows on every façade.

With little natural shade, heat build up during the day was extreme. A creative shade solution was needed for maximum shade cover and to complement the building’s blue grey design.

The building had a series of external structural posts. By using these as load bearing fixing points, a repeating series of screen could be used to cover virtually all of the upper windows. Each screen’s footprint was minimal and when pulled taut, 95% shade cover was acheived.

A special cobalt blue shade material was selected as it allows filtered light in but keeps heat and glare out. This glare reduction is especially important for staff using computers. Correctly positioned shade screens can block out up to 95% of the suns rays and cut heat levels down dramatically.

The end result was a modern, light and airy looking shade structure. Staff could now work in comfort, whatever the weather! Mulders specialize in shade structures.
